The Photophone is an Optical Telephone, originally invented by Alexander Graham Bell and Charles Sumner Tainter in February 1880. Challenger has refined the design, incorporating his luminiferous aether theories, such that it is now a portable unit that can send and transmit sound through a larger base unit that might be housed in a carriage.

An Operator makes a Smarts roll (-2 for Medium Range, -4 for Long Range) and on a success may speak a single sentence that will be transmitted to all other active recievers in range. With a further -2 penalty the operator may send the message to specific reciever or recievers.
Also, the base unit operator may make a smarts roll to 'send on' a message recieved from a personal unit.
